2012 Program

Australian Desert Expeditions (ADE) ecological surveys and Outback Camel Company (OCC) expeditions in 2012.

In 2011, both companies have been busy documenting and exploring the Simpson Desert in Queensland and the Northern Territory and since 2009 have been eyewitness to exceptional seasonal conditions, watching the flood pulse of the great desert rivers in all their sublime majesty and experiencing first hand the magnificent diversity of the boom/bust cycle of desert life.

Following on from the successful 2010 & 2011 seasons, the ADE Directors have identified several key areas that we would like to survey in the Simpson, Great Victoria and Gibson Deserts.

In planning the 2012 season, it has become evident that the proposed survey expeditions would require a depth of organisation exceeding what the available pre-season time frame can offer, bearing in mind that the 2012 programme must be finalised and released in January.

The ADE directors have therefore decided that to give these expeditions the full dedication and preparation they call for, the 2012 trekking season will be rescheduled until 2013. As both ADE and OCC are interlinked with logistics during the winter, this decision also affects the commercial treks and expeditions of the Outback Camel Company.

Consequently, in 2012 there will be no ADE surveys nor any OCC commercial treks or expeditions.

 As you know, Australian Desert Expeditions & the Outback Camel Company have an extensive exploration & expedition track record. Rather than ‘taking a year off’, 2012 will allow us to fully prepare, enabling us to continue to explore in a sustainable and ecologically responsible manner, unravelling the secrets of the desert. During 2012, Australian Desert Expeditions will also be holding a number of events to raise its public profile, particularly within the philanthropic community, enabling us to take full advantage of our not-for-profit tax status.

Both companies are the custodians of the legacy of Australia's great inland explorers - a proud living link to the heritage of Australia’s early 'Afghan' cameleers - and Australian Desert Expeditions continues the historical traditions of scientific desert exploration of the 19^th and 20^th Centuries. We look forward to continuing the distinctive “bushmanship” skills, understandings and resourcefulness of our expeditions, which share their origins with the indigenous knowledge of the land as well as with the heritage of the Australian stockman.
