Desert
Floodplain Trek
Desert river floodplains
are fascinating ecosystems. Parched dry for many consecutive years they explode with life
after heavy rains fall in the upper catchments and drive water down their intricate
drainage lines, inundating expansive floodplains. The Mulligan River, on the eastern edge
of the Simpson Desert experienced a significant flood in March 2010 & 2011 and this
trek will detail the response of both plants and animals to this continual flooding.
Trekking across the floodplain we will be focusing our efforts on investigating which
animals have moved in to take advantage of the boom in food and other resources. This will
be a rare opportunity to witness a desert river system in full bloom.
